There are roughly 2,000 to 2,600 steps in a mile, and where you fall in that range depends almost entirely on your height. An average-height man covers a mile in about 2,220 steps; an average-height woman in about 2,400. The familiar “2,000 steps to a mile” rule is a rounded convenience that, as the arithmetic below shows, actually fits someone around 6′5″ tall — which is to say, almost nobody.
Why the number moves so much
Steps per mile is not a fact about walking; it is a fact about your legs. A mile is a fixed distance — exactly 1,609.344 metres, or 160,934.4 cm — so the only variable is how much ground you cover per step. Step length scales closely with height, at a published working ratio of about 0.41–0.42 × height, which makes the calculation straightforward:
- Step length (cm) = height (cm) × ~0.414
- Steps per mile = 160,934.4 ÷ step length
At 170 cm that is a step of about 70.4 cm, and 160,934.4 ÷ 70.4 gives roughly 2,287 steps per mile. Do the same for a 150 cm walker and it rises to about 2,590; for a 190 cm walker it falls to about 2,045. That is a spread of more than 500 steps for the same single mile.

The average steps in a mile figure below is calculated rather than surveyed, so you can check it against your own height rather than trusting a single national number.

The 2,000-step rule fits almost nobody
It is worth being blunt about this, because the figure is repeated everywhere. Work backwards from 2,000 steps per mile and the step length it implies is about 80.5 cm — which, at a ratio of 0.414, corresponds to a height of roughly 195 cm, or 6′5″. Unless you are that tall, 2,000 understates how many steps a mile actually takes you.
The practical consequence is that the rule flatters your distance. An average-height woman using 2,000 steps per mile would read 10,000 steps as 5 miles, when her real figure is closer to 4.2 miles — an overestimate of about three-quarters of a mile every single day. Why women take more steps — and why it is not what most articles claim
Women do average more steps per mile than men, but the usual explanation — that women have a shorter stride — is only half right, and the half it gets wrong is the interesting one.
Look at the table above and compare a man and a woman at the same height. At 170 cm the figures are 2,281 and 2,292: a difference of 11 steps over an entire mile, about half a percent. The step-length-to-height ratios behind those numbers are 0.415 and 0.413, which are very nearly the same.
Now compare the averages instead. A man of average height (~175 cm) takes about 2,216 steps; a woman of average height (~162 cm) takes about 2,405. That gap is around 190 steps, roughly 8%. Since same-height individuals differ by only 11, effectively the entire sex difference is a height difference, not a difference in gait. A tall woman covers a mile in fewer steps than a short man, every time. If you want your own number, height is the input that matters; sex barely moves it.
Walking versus running
Speed changes the answer too. Stride lengthens as you move faster, so a mile at a run takes noticeably fewer steps than the same mile at a walk. Hoeger and colleagues measured one-mile step counts at both walking and running speeds precisely to quantify this, and the direction is consistent: faster pace, longer stride, fewer steps per mile.
The practical point is that a single steps-per-mile figure should not be applied to both activities. If your tracker logs a brisk walk and an easy run with the same conversion, one of the two distances is wrong. The same caution applies to hills, sand, treadmills and heavy footwear, all of which shorten stride relative to level ground.
How to measure your own
Every figure on this page is a model based on height, and a model is a starting point rather than an answer. Measuring takes five minutes and beats any estimate:
- Use a running track. Four laps of lane one is 1,600 m, within about 0.6% of a mile. Walk it at your normal pace and count your steps — that count is your steps per mile.
- Or measure a shorter distance. Walk a known 100 m, count the steps, and divide 160,934 cm by (10,000 cm ÷ steps) to scale it up.
- Repeat at your usual pace. Strolling and striding give different answers, so measure the way you actually walk.
