VO₂ max is the most oxygen your body can use during hard exercise, in millilitres per kilogram per minute. The Cooper test estimates it as (metres run in 12 minutes − 504.9) ÷ 44.73 — so 2,400 m works out at about 42 ml/kg/min.

Both are published field methods, and both are estimates rather than measurements.

The Cooper test needs a track and a hard 12 minutes. The heart rate method needs nothing but two pulse readings, which makes it convenient — but it leans entirely on those two numbers being right, and most people do not know their true maximum heart rate.
A worked example
Run 2,400 m in 12 minutes. Subtract 504.9 to get 1,895.1, divide by 44.73, and you have 42.4 ml/kg/min. Dividing by 3.5 converts that to about 12 METs, since one MET is defined as 3.5 ml/kg/min.
A useful check on the formula: feed it exactly 504.9 m and it returns zero, which is the equation's own zero point.
The part most calculators skip
An estimate from a field test is not the same thing as a measured VO₂ max. A real one comes from cardiopulmonary exercise testing — a graded treadmill or bike protocol with a mask analysing the air you breathe out. That is the measurement the reference standards are built from.
So when you see a chart of VO₂ max percentiles by age, be careful. Those standards — the largest being the FRIEND registry, covering 22,379 tests of adults aged 20 to 89 — come from lab testing. Reading a Cooper-test estimate against them to two decimal places implies a precision that neither the test nor the comparison actually has. Use them as a rough band, not a percentile.
What the standards do show clearly is the shape: the 50th percentile falls with every decade of age, and runs higher in men than in women at every age group.
Using the number
The most useful thing about VO₂ max is not the absolute figure but its direction over months. Retesting the same way, on the same track, at a similar time of day removes most of the noise that makes single readings hard to compare.

It depends heavily on age and sex, and there is no single figure. Rather than chase one number, compare against your own age band and watch the trend over months.
Is a calculated VO2 max accurate?
It is an estimate, not a measurement. A true VO2 max is measured in a laboratory with a gas-analysis mask during a graded exercise test. Field formulas approximate that from performance or heart rate and carry real error either side. Treat the number as a ballpark you can track, not a precise physiological value.
How does VO2 max relate to METs?
One MET is defined as 3.5 ml/kg/min of oxygen consumption, so dividing your VO2 max by 3.5 gives your capacity in METs. A VO2 max of 42 ml/kg/min is about 12 METs. This calculator shows both.
Can I estimate VO2 max without running?
Yes. The heart rate ratio method from Uth and colleagues estimates VO2 max as 15.3 multiplied by the ratio of your maximum to resting heart rate, needing no exercise test at all. It is more sensitive to the accuracy of those two numbers than the Cooper test is to distance, so take your resting rate on waking and use a measured maximum if you have one.
