What FFMI tells you
FFMI (Fat-Free Mass Index) measures how much lean, fat-free mass you carry relative to your height. Where BMI lumps muscle and fat together, FFMI isolates the lean part, so it is a far better gauge of muscularity — a lifter flagged "overweight" by BMI usually has a perfectly healthy FFMI. To calculate it, the tool first works out your fat-free mass (weight minus the fat portion from your body-fat percentage), then divides that by your height in metres squared.
Because taller people get a small automatic boost in raw FFMI, the calculator also shows a normalized, height-adjusted figure that standardizes everyone to a 1.80 m reference. Use the normalized number whenever you compare yourself to the ranges below or to the widely cited natural limit.
How to read your FFMI
For men, a normalized FFMI around 18–20 is average, the low-20s is well-muscled, and roughly 25 is the ceiling most drug-free athletes reach — in the original research no steroid-free lifter exceeded about 25. Women carry less lean mass, so their bands sit two to three points lower. Treat the upper bands as "unusual", not as proof of anything: body-fat estimates carry error and genetics vary.

The FFMI formula
FFMI is calculated in three steps, and you can reproduce every one of them by hand:
- Fat-free mass = weight in kg × (1 − body-fat % ÷ 100)
- Raw FFMI = fat-free mass ÷ (height in metres)²
- Normalized FFMI = raw FFMI + 6.1 × (1.8 − height in metres)
A worked example: an 80 kg man at 1.80 m with 15% body fat carries 80 × 0.85 = 68 kg of fat-free mass. Divided by 1.80² (3.24) that is a raw FFMI of 21.0. Because he is exactly 1.80 m, the normalization term is zero, so his normalized FFMI is also 21.0 — above average, comfortably short of the natural ceiling.
The FFMI natural limit and the Kouri study
The number most people arrive here looking for is 25. It comes from Kouri and colleagues (1995), who measured 157 male athletes — some drug-free, some who had used anabolic steroids. Among the drug-free men, essentially none exceeded a normalized FFMI of about 25, while the steroid-using group routinely did. That single observation is why 25 gets quoted as the natural limit for men.
It is worth being precise about what that does and does not mean. It was one study, on a sample of competitive athletes, using skinfold-based body-fat estimates — so the number is a population observation, not a drug test. A genuinely exceptional natural athlete, or simply an underestimated body-fat reading, can produce a figure a little above 25. Treat 25 as the point where a score becomes unusual and worth double-checking, not as evidence of anything about a particular person.
What your FFMI score means
Reading the common normalized scores for men, from the calculator's own bands:
- FFMI 18–19 — average for an adult man who does not train seriously.
- FFMI 20 — above average; typically a year or two of consistent lifting.
- FFMI 21–22 — visibly muscular in normal clothing; a solid intermediate lifter.
- FFMI 23 — excellent, and beyond what most lifters reach without years of work.
- FFMI 24 — approaching the drug-free ceiling; rare in the general population.
- FFMI 25 — the widely cited natural limit for men. Attainable, but exceptional.
- FFMI 26–28 — above what the Kouri sample of drug-free athletes reached. Before drawing conclusions, re-check the body-fat figure — an underestimate inflates FFMI quickly.

FFMI for women
Women carry less lean mass than men at the same height and training age, so reading a woman's score on the men's scale makes her look under-muscled when she is not. The reference bands sit roughly two to three points lower: around 15–17 is average, 18–19 is excellent, and the practical drug-free ceiling is nearer 22 than 25. This calculator applies the sex-specific bands automatically, so the interpretation you see already accounts for it.
One caveat specific to women: the natural-limit research was conducted on men, so the women's ceiling is an extrapolation from population data rather than a directly measured equivalent. It is a reasonable guide, not a hard number.

What is FFMI and how is it different from BMI?
FFMI (Fat-Free Mass Index) measures how much lean, fat-free mass you carry relative to your height, whereas BMI simply divides total weight by height squared. Because BMI cannot tell muscle from fat, a muscular person is often flagged "overweight" by BMI while their FFMI shows they are simply well-muscled. FFMI needs a body-fat percentage as an input; BMI does not.
Why does the calculator show both a raw and a 'normalized' FFMI?
Raw FFMI slightly favours taller people, so two equally muscular lifters of different heights can get different raw scores. The normalized (height-adjusted) FFMI standardizes everyone to a 1.80 m reference using the correction 6.1 × (1.8 − height in metres), which makes scores comparable across heights. Use the normalized number when comparing yourself to reference ranges or to the natural limit.
Is a normalized FFMI above 25 proof of steroid use?
No. In the Kouri et al. (1995) study no drug-free male athlete exceeded a normalized FFMI of about 25, and it is widely cited as a practical drug-free ceiling for men. But it is a population observation, not a test — exceptional genetics or error in a body-fat estimate can push the number a little higher naturally. Treat 25 as a soft reference point, not a verdict, and note the limit applies to men; women’s bands are lower.
How accurate is my FFMI number?
FFMI is only as good as the body-fat percentage you feed it. A DXA scan or careful skinfold reading gives a solid estimate; a rough guess or a cheap scale can be off by several percentage points, which shifts your FFMI. If you do not have a measured body-fat number, use a body-fat estimator first, and re-check FFMI whenever you get a better measurement.
