Steps to Miles Calculator

Convert a step count into miles and kilometres using your own stride length — or work backwards from a distance to the steps it would take.

For a walker of average height, 10,000 steps is roughly 4.4 miles (7.0 km), and one mile takes about 2,290 steps — but height moves both figures by a wide margin.

How steps convert to miles

The conversion is one multiplication and one division, and it is worth seeing rather than taking on trust. Your step length is estimated from your height — a published forensic-gait working ratio of about 0.41–0.42 × height — and a mile is defined as exactly 1,609.344 metres, or 160,934.4 cm.

  • Step length = height (cm) × 0.414  →  at 170 cm that is 70.4 cm
  • Distance = steps × step length ÷ 160,934.4

So 10,000 steps at that stride covers 10,000 × 70.4 = 703,800 cm, and 703,800 ÷ 160,934.4 gives 4.37 miles. Run it backwards — 160,934.4 ÷ 70.4 — and you get 2,287 steps per mile. The calculator above does both directions and uses your own height rather than the average.

Steps to miles chart

A quick reference for common step counts, calculated for a walker of 170 cm (5'7"). The row people look for most is 10000 steps to miles, at just under four and a half; the answer to how many steps in a mile runs the other way, at about 2,290. Your own figures will differ — see the height table below for how much.

Why height changes the answer so much

The familiar “2,000 steps to a mile” rule is only right for unusually tall walkers. Because step length scales with height, the same 10,000 steps can be anything from under four miles to nearly five:

Height10,000 stepsSteps per mile
150 cm (4'11")3.86 mi2,592
160 cm (5'3")4.12 mi2,430
170 cm (5'7")4.37 mi2,287
180 cm (5'11")4.63 mi2,160
190 cm (6'3")4.89 mi2,046

A full mile separates the shortest and tallest walkers here for an identical step count — which is why a single fixed conversion misleads most people.

Miles to steps, and getting a more accurate figure

The reverse direction answers the more practical question: if you want to walk five miles, how many steps is that? For the same 170 cm walker it is about 11,400 steps. Switch the calculator to Miles → steps and it converts any distance, in miles or kilometres, into your personal step count.

One honest limitation: estimating step length from height is a population average. It ignores your individual gait, and stride genuinely lengthens as you walk faster, so a brisk walk covers more ground per step than a stroll. If accuracy matters, measure it — walk a known distance such as a 400 m running track, count your steps, and divide. That measured figure beats any height-based estimate.

Distance is only half the picture. To turn the same walk into energy expenditure, use the steps to calories calculator, which applies walking MET values on top of this distance; for how long a given distance takes at a given speed, see the pace calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How many miles is 10,000 steps?

For someone of average height, about 4.4 miles (7.0 km). The figure moves with your height, because a taller walker covers more ground per step: at 150 cm (4'11") 10,000 steps is roughly 3.9 miles, while at 190 cm (6'3") it is closer to 4.9 miles. That is a difference of a full mile for the same step count, which is why a single fixed answer is misleading.

How many steps are in a mile?

Between roughly 2,000 and 2,600, depending on your height. Someone 170 cm (5'7") tall averages about 2,287 steps per mile; at 150 cm it is nearer 2,590, and at 190 cm about 2,050. The common "2,000 steps per mile" rule of thumb only holds for quite tall walkers, and overstates the distance for most people. The calculator above gives your personal figure.

How do you convert steps to miles?

Multiply your step count by your step length, then divide by the length of a mile. Step length is estimated from height at roughly 0.41–0.42 × height, so a 170 cm person has a step of about 70 cm. Ten thousand steps then covers 10,000 × 70.4 cm = 703,800 cm, and since a mile is exactly 160,934.4 cm, that is 703,800 ÷ 160,934.4 ≈ 4.37 miles.

How many steps is 5 miles?

About 11,400 steps for a walker of average height, though anywhere from roughly 10,200 steps (at 190 cm) to 12,900 steps (at 150 cm) depending on stride. Switch the calculator above to "Miles → steps" to convert any distance, in miles or kilometres, into the step count it would take you specifically.

Is the steps-to-miles conversion exact?

The mile itself is exact — 1,609.344 metres by definition — but your step length is an estimate. Deriving it from height is a population average and does not account for your individual gait, walking speed, terrain or footwear; stride also lengthens as you walk faster. For a more accurate personal figure, walk a measured distance such as a 400 m running track, count your steps, and divide. Entering that measured step length beats any height-based estimate.
