Run-walk pace is not the average of your two paces. Running 4 minutes at 6:00/km and walking 1 minute at 9:00/km gives 6:26 per km, not 7:30 — because you spend 80% of each cycle running, and the walk still covers ground.
Why averaging the paces is wrong
This is the mistake that puts people off the method before they try it. Averaging 6:00 and 9:00 gives 7:30 per km, which sounds ruinous — a minute and a half per kilometre is an enormous concession. But that figure treats the run and the walk as if you spent equal time in each, and in a 4:1 ratio you plainly do not.

Twenty-six seconds per kilometre is a very different proposition from ninety. Over a marathon that is the gap between roughly 4:31 and 5:16 — which is why the arithmetic is worth doing properly before deciding the method is not for you.
How the calculation works
Take one complete cycle and ask how far it covers. Time divided by pace gives distance, so:
blended pace = (run time + walk time) ÷ (run time ÷ run pace + walk time ÷ walk pace)
With 4 minutes running at 6:00/km you cover 4 ÷ 6 = 0.667 km. The walking minute at 9:00/km adds 1 ÷ 9 = 0.111 km. So a 5-minute cycle covers 0.778 km, and 5 ÷ 0.778 = 6.43 minutes per km, or 6:26.
Two checks confirm the formula behaves: set the walk pace equal to the run pace and the result collapses to that pace, and set the walk interval to zero and it collapses to your running pace. Both hold.
Choosing a ratio
Ratios in common use run from 30 seconds and 30 seconds at one end to 9 minutes and 1 minute at the other. Shorter run segments cost more overall pace but leave you fresher; longer ones cost less but ask more of you late on. Rather than looking for a right answer, enter two or three options above and compare the finish times against how each would actually feel at 30 km.
The structured approach is generally associated with Jeff Galloway, the American Olympian who popularised run-walk-run from the 1970s. This page implements the pacing arithmetic and takes no position on the training claims made for it.
What this cannot tell you
It assumes you hold both paces evenly for the whole distance. That is precisely what tiring runners do not do, and it is also the main argument made for run-walk — that the breaks prevent the late collapse. So if you would have faded badly running throughout, your real finish could beat the figure above; if you would have held pace, it will not. No calculator can settle that, and this one does not pretend to.

How do you calculate run-walk pace?
Work out how far you travel in one full run-walk cycle, then divide the cycle time by that distance. Running 4 minutes at 6:00 per km covers 0.667 km, and walking 1 minute at 9:00 per km adds 0.111 km, so a 5-minute cycle covers 0.778 km. Five minutes divided by 0.778 gives 6:26 per km. It is not the average of the two paces.
Does adding walk breaks make you much slower?
Less than most people expect. With a 4:1 ratio at 6:00 per km running and 9:00 per km walking, the overall pace is 6:26 — about 26 seconds per km slower, not the 90 seconds you would get by averaging the two paces. The reason is that you spend 80% of each cycle running, and the walking minute still covers ground rather than stopping.
What is the best run-walk ratio?
There is no single best ratio, and this calculator does not recommend one. Common patterns range from 30 seconds running and 30 seconds walking up to 9 minutes running and 1 minute walking. The ratio that suits you depends on your fitness, the distance, and how you feel late in a race. Enter a few options above and compare the finish times.
Will run-walk give me a faster marathon time than running the whole way?
It might, but arithmetic alone cannot tell you. This calculator assumes you hold both paces evenly for the entire distance. In practice the argument for run-walk is that it prevents the late slowdown, so a runner who would have faded badly may finish quicker despite the walk breaks, while a runner who would have held pace will not. Only your own long runs can answer that.
