From steps to calories, honestly
Your phone counts steps, but calories depend on who is taking them. This calculator bridges the gap in three steps: your height sets your step length (about 0.41–0.42 × height, a published forensic-gait working ratio), steps × step length gives distance, and your pace determines both how long the walk took and its intensity in METs — the standard unit of exercise energy cost from the Compendium of Physical Activities. The final figure uses the same ACSM equation behind our calories burned calculator.
Two honest caveats: the result is gross expenditure (it includes resting burn for those minutes), and step length from height is a population average — measuring your own over a known distance is more accurate. For daily energy planning, feed your activity level into the TDEE calculator rather than adding step calories on top.

Converting calories to steps is the more useful direction if you already have a calorie target in mind. Divide the target by the cost of one step: for the same reference walker a step is about 0.039 kcal, so a 500 kcal walk takes roughly 11,900 steps — about five and a half miles, and around an hour and three-quarters on your feet. The 3,500 kcal row is there to make a point rather than to be attempted: that figure is the old "one pound of fat" rule, and walking it off in a day would take some twelve and a half hours. Making the steps count
Intensity moves the needle more than the count: at 3.5 mph "brisk" walking earns a MET of 4.3 versus 3.5 at a moderate 3 mph — about 20% more burn for the same minutes. Hills, stairs and loaded carries cost more still (they're beyond this level-ground estimate). Are these "extra" calories on top of what I normally burn?
Not quite. The result is gross expenditure — it includes the calories you would have burned at rest during the same minutes. The genuinely "extra" cost of walking is somewhat lower, so avoid adding this number wholesale on top of a resting-calorie figure; our TDEE calculator already accounts for daily activity.

About 11,900 steps for a 70 kg (154 lb) person of average height walking at a moderate 3 mph — roughly two hours and just under six miles. Because the cost per step scales with body weight, a 90 kg walker covers the same 500 kcal in about 9,300 steps, while a 55 kg walker needs closer to 15,200.
How many steps to burn 100 calories?
Around 2,400 steps for a 70 kg person at a moderate 3 mph — a little over a mile, or about 23 minutes of walking. Walking faster changes it surprisingly little: a brisk 3.5 mph raises the MET value from 3.5 to 4.3, but you also spend less time per step, so the two effects mostly cancel and you need about 2,450 steps rather than 2,600. Pace saves you time, not steps.
How many steps to burn 1,000 calories?
Roughly 23,900 steps at 70 kg and 3 mph — close to 12 miles and nearly four hours of walking. That is a long day on your feet rather than a routine target; if the goal is a calorie deficit, adjusting intake is far easier to sustain than adding 26,000 steps.
How do I convert calories back into steps?
Divide your calorie target by the cost of a single step. For a 70 kg person of average height at 3 mph that is about 0.042 kcal per step, so 500 kcal ÷ 0.042 ≈ 11,900 steps. Do I really need 10,000 steps a day?
The 10,000 figure began as a marketing slogan, not science. Research shows health benefits rising steeply up to about 7,000–8,000 daily steps, with diminishing returns beyond. Official guidance (CDC) is framed in time instead: at least 150 minutes of moderate activity — like brisk walking — per week.
