US Navy tape (circumference) method
This method estimates body fat from the circumference of your neck, waist, and (for women) hips, plus your height, using an equation the U.S. Navy developed to screen personnel. Validation studies put its standard error around 3.6 to 3.8 percentage points against DXA, so most people land within about 3 to 4 points. Its real strength is repeatability: measuring a circumference has almost no operator-to-operator variation, so untrained users get consistent numbers. Skinfold calipers
Calipers pinch a fold of skin and fat at several standard sites (commonly 3 or 7) and feed the millimetre readings into a prediction equation. Bioelectrical impedance (BIA) scales and handheld devices

DXA (the practical gold standard)
Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA or DEXA) uses two low-dose X-ray beams to separate fat, lean mass, and bone, and it reports where the fat sits region by region. It is the most widely used clinical reference, typically within 1 to 2 percentage points, and it doubles as a bone-density scan. A session usually runs about $50 to $150 (roughly 45 to 140 euros) at a clinic and involves a very small radiation dose, lower than a standard chest X-ray.
Hydrostatic weighing and the Bod Pod
Hydrostatic (underwater) weighing was the long-standing research reference: you are weighed while fully submerged, and your body fat is calculated from your density using Archimedes' principle, since fat is less dense than muscle and bone. It is accurate to roughly 2 to 3 percentage points but requires full submersion and a lab. The Bod Pod measures the same density using air displacement instead of water, with comparable accuracy and far more comfort. How to take the Navy method measurements correctly
The tape method is only as good as your technique. Use a flexible cloth or fibreglass tape, stand relaxed, breathe normally, and never suck in or pull the tape tight enough to compress the skin. Stick to one unit, centimetres or inches, and record to the nearest half-centimetre or quarter-inch.
- Neck: measure just below the larynx (the Adam's apple), keeping the tape sloping slightly downward toward the front. Do not flare the neck or tuck the chin.
- Waist (men): measure horizontally at navel level, at the end of a normal exhale, without pulling the stomach in. For men the waist is the single biggest driver of the estimate, so take it twice and average.
- Waist (women): measure at the narrowest part of the torso, above the navel and below the ribcage; if there is no obvious narrowest point, use the level midway between the lowest rib and the top of the hip bone.
- Hips (women only): measure around the widest part of the buttocks with your feet together, keeping the tape level all the way around.

Why the trend matters more than a single reading
Every method above is an estimate wrapped in a margin of error, and each one measures fat slightly differently, so two tools on the same day can disagree by several points. That makes any single number less useful than the direction it moves. If your reading drifts down over a month or two while your training and eating stay consistent, and you use the same method under the same conditions each time, that downward trend is meaningful even when the exact decimal is uncertain. Comparing a morning caliper reading to an evening smart-scale reading, by contrast, tells you almost nothing.
Technique and hydration are the main sources of day-to-day noise. Being dehydrated, having just eaten, or having just exercised can shift a BIA reading by a couple of points in either direction, and a tape pulled too tight or too loose does the same to the Navy method. Lock down those variables, same time of day, same hydration state, same tester, and your trend line gets far cleaner.
Fitting body fat into the bigger picture
Body fat percentage answers "how much of me is fat," but it says nothing about how much muscle you carry for your frame.
