15,000 steps is about 6.6 miles, or 10.6 km, for a walker of average height — 170 cm, or 5′7″. At a normal walking pace that is roughly 2 hours and 11 minutes on your feet.
You will often see 15,000 steps described as 7 to 8 miles. That figure is not wrong so much as it belongs to somebody taller than average, and the gap between the two answers is worth about a mile. The rest of this page explains where the difference comes from.
Why your height changes the answer
A mile is fixed — exactly 1,609.344 metres, or 160,934.4 cm. Your step length is not. It scales closely with height, at a published working ratio of about 0.41–0.42 × height, so the whole calculation is:
- Step length (cm) = height (cm) × 0.414
- Distance = 15,000 × step length ÷ 160,934.4
At 170 cm that is a step of 70.4 cm, so 15,000 steps covers 1,055,700 cm — which is 6.56 miles. Change the height and the answer moves a long way:

Where the “7 to 8 miles” figure comes from
That range traces back to how one widely covered study reported its result. In 2017 Tigbe and colleagues studied 111 Glasgow postal workers and found that those with no metabolic risk factors tended to be walking more than 15,000 steps a day — described in the coverage as the equivalent of seven to eight miles.
Run that backwards. Seven miles across 15,000 steps means each step covered 160,934.4 × 7 ÷ 15,000 = about 75 cm. At a ratio of 0.414, a 75 cm step belongs to someone roughly 181 cm tall (5′11″). Eight miles implies a step of 86 cm, which is taller still — or a walker moving fast enough to stretch their stride well beyond a normal walking gait.
Neither is wrong for the person it describes. But if you are of average height and have been using 7.5 miles as your figure, you have been crediting yourself with close to a mile you did not walk. Over a year of daily walking that is a substantial error in any distance or calorie total built on top of it.
How long 15,000 steps takes
Time depends on pace rather than height, since a shorter walker takes more steps but each one takes less time. For a 170 cm walker covering 6.56 miles:

Two hours of continuous walking is a real commitment, which is why most people who hit 15,000 accumulate it across a day rather than in one go. That distinction matters for more than scheduling: a single long walk and a day of scattered steps produce the same distance but not the same training effect. Step up to 20,000 steps and the same walk becomes 8.8 miles and close to three hours — past the point where it fits around a normal day at all.
Calories burned by 15,000 steps
Body weight drives this far more than height does. The figures below use the standard ACSM equation with the walking MET value for a 3 mph pace, over the 2h 11m that 15,000 steps takes at that speed:

These are gross figures: they include the calories your body would have burned at rest over those two hours, which is a meaningful share of the total. The extra energy attributable to the walk itself is lower — often by 100–200 kcal. Any tracker that reports a single large number is almost certainly reporting gross too.
Is 15,000 a better target than 10,000?
Worth being careful here, because this is the part most pages overstate. The 15,000 figure comes from a cross-sectional study — a snapshot of 111 postal workers at one point in time. It found an association between higher step counts and the absence of metabolic risk factors. It did not, and structurally could not, show that walking more caused the better profile. People who walk 15,000 steps daily for work differ from office workers in more ways than step count alone.
The 10,000-step target has an even thinner origin: it began as the name of a Japanese pedometer marketed in the 1960s, not as a clinical recommendation. Neither number is a threshold you must clear. More walking is generally better than less, the benefit curve is steepest at the low end, and the step count you will actually sustain beats the one you admire.

Better still, measure it. Four laps of lane one on a running track is 1,600 m, within 0.6% of a mile. Walk it at your normal pace, count your steps, and you have a personal steps-per-mile figure that beats any height-based estimate — because it captures your real gait, pace and terrain rather than a population average.
