20,000 steps is about 8.8 miles, or 14.1 km, for a walker of average height — 170 cm, or 5′7″. At a normal walking pace that is nearly three hours on your feet.
That second number is the one worth sitting with. 20,000 steps is not a step count you drift into on a busy day; at almost any realistic pace it is a deliberate decision about how to spend an afternoon.
The distance, and why height moves it
A mile is fixed at exactly 1,609.344 metres, or 160,934.4 cm. Your step length is not — it scales with height at a published working ratio of about 0.41–0.42 × height:
- Step length (cm) = height (cm) × 0.414
- Distance = 20,000 × step length ÷ 160,934.4
At 170 cm that is a 70.4 cm step, so 20,000 steps covers 1,407,600 cm — 8.75 miles. Across a realistic range of heights the answer varies by more than two miles:

A useful landmark: at 190 cm, 20,000 steps is within a fifth of a mile of a 10-mile walk. At 150 cm the same count leaves you more than two miles short of that. If you and a taller friend both hit 20,000, you did not walk the same distance.
How long it takes
Pace, not height, governs the time — a shorter walker takes more steps but each one takes proportionally less time. For a 170 cm walker covering 8.75 miles:

Note what the brisk row implies. Even walking fast enough to be slightly breathless, 20,000 steps still costs more than two hours. There is no pace at which this becomes a quick errand, which is the practical difference between 20,000 and the more commonly hit 10,000.

A four-figure calorie burn looks dramatic, so it is worth saying plainly what it is not. These are gross figures — they include everything your body would have burned lying on the sofa for those same three hours. At this duration that resting share is large, often 200–250 kcal, so the energy genuinely attributable to the walking is lower than the table suggests. Treating the full number as a licence to eat it back is the most common way this calculation gets misused.
Is 20,000 steps a day too much?
For most healthy adults, no — but the honest caution is about the jump, not the number. Three hours of daily walking is a real mechanical load on feet, shins and knees. Overuse injuries like plantar fasciitis and shin splints characteristically follow sharp increases in volume rather than high volume itself, so someone who has built to 20,000 gradually is in a very different position from someone going there tomorrow from a baseline of 5,000.
There is also a plain time cost. Three hours a day is more than most people can protect indefinitely, and a target abandoned after a fortnight is worth less than a smaller one kept for a year. If 20,000 is a weekend walk rather than a daily quota, that is a perfectly sensible way to use it.
Build up gradually rather than jumping, and if you have joint problems, a heart condition or any other relevant medical condition, talk to a qualified healthcare professional before making a large increase in daily activity.

That measured number beats any height-based estimate, because it reflects your real gait and pace.
